Rules and Regulations

Workshop and Big Sing: Tuesday 25 February 2020 at JW Marriott

Heats: Wednesday 26 February 2020 (timings to be confirmed)

Grand Final: Thursday 27 February 2020, 5pm

Competition Rules

Each choir must not exceed 90 members, who must be aged 5-8, 8-11, 11-14 in each respective category. Teachers may not form part of the school choir.

The participation fee is 2,000 QAR for schools entering one choir and 3,000 QAR for schools entering two or more choirs. As a shared event for all schools in Qatar, we are self-funding. We present this event for all, to promote choral singing in Qatar and the development of music education across the country. All funds raised are directly channelled into the event, paying for venue hire, flights, fees and costs for our lead adjudicator, audio & visual for the entire event, piano hire and tuning, transporting choir risers, marketing etc. Given our move to the Qatar National Convention Centre, as the competition has grown exponentially in size, we now have increased costs. We hope that schools will support us in this endeavour.

Choirs will perform one free choice piece and one set piece as detailed below, either accompanied or unaccompanied, not exceeding 8 minutes in total. Music must be appropriate for the audience and be culturally sensitive.

  • Set song for ages 5-8:                Hear The Wind, Emily Crocker
  • Set song for ages 8-11:               Lady Dressed in White, Lin Marsh
  • Set song for ages 11-14:              It Don’t Mean a Thing if it Ain’t Got that Swing, Ellington/Mills

A clean copy of the music must be provided to the judges on the day.

Children in the choirs must remain under the supervision of their school staff during the competition heats and final. Children must be supervised by at least one adult for every ten children. Failure to do so may result in disqualification from the competition.

Parental consent must be given for each child to take part in the competition and the permission for each child to appear in photographs and recordings must be sought by your school. The named contact will be responsible for obtaining all permissions necessary from the choir members participating before entering the competition. Proof of relevant consents may be requested.

Each school involved is required to cover their own expenses and organise their own travel arrangements.

Tickets for heats and the final will be available for parents through an online ticketing website.

Choirs should provide their own accompanist. A piano will be provided. No other accompanying instruments are permitted. No backing tracks are allowed.

Doha College reserves the right to disqualify any choir which does not adhere to the rules of the competition.

In each heat and the final, there will be a carefully selected independent panel of judges. All judges will listen carefully to the quality and style of the singing and will select schools throughout the competition using the following scoring criteria:

Technical ability e.g. tuning, diction, voice quality, balance, dynamics, overall sound.

Musical Expression e.g. musicality, communication, phrasing, passion, energy, commitment and interpretation of the text.
